What Makes ITF Taekwon-Do Different From Olympic-Style Taekwondo?

ITF Taekwon-Do is a distinct style from the Olympic (WT) version you may have watched at the Games. ITF trains the whole body, incorporating hand strikes, low kicks, and self-defence combinations alongside the high, dynamic kicking that both styles share. The Olympic format centres heavily on point-scoring foot techniques and is primarily a competitive sport. ITF, by contrast, preserves the traditional art developed by General Choi Hong Hi, with a strong focus on pattern work (tul), fundamental techniques, step-sparring, and practical self-defence.

What Happens at Your First Adult Taekwondo Class?

Your first session is low-pressure and designed to ease you in. Here is what you can typically expect when you join the taekwondo classes:

  • A brief welcome and introduction to the dojang etiquette and core values of Taekwon-Do.
  • A guided warm-up to build mobility and prepare your body safely for training.
  • Introduction to basic stances, blocks, and striking techniques at a comfortable pace.
  • Light partner or solo drills so you can practise fundamentals in a supported setting.
  • A cool-down and Q&A with the instructor to discuss your goals and next steps.

Just bring comfortable training clothes and a water bottle. No uniform or prior experience is required to attend your first class.

Led by a World Champion Instructor

South Australia ITF Taekwon-Do is led by Cher Liang Tay (Liang), a world champion in the 2020 ITF Taekwon-Do E Tournament, a medallist at the 2017 Asia Open Championship, and a multiple-time Australian national champion with over 20 years of Taekwon-Do experience. Liang also serves as a Technical Committee Member for the One Legacy International Taekwon-Do Federation and has been National Head Coach for the World Championship in Finland. His broader training in judo, wushu, and Tai Chi brings a well-rounded perspective to adult classes that few dojos in South Australia can match.
